Comments

The popular poem Psyche, or the Legend of Love by Irish poet Mary Tighe (1772-1810) was first privately printed in 1805 in an edition of 50 copies and circulated in fair copy manuscripts. Tighe died in 1810, and this volume was posthumously compiled and edited by her husband Henry Tighe, with the addition of more than 35 previously unpublished poems, including 20 sonnets. Psyche, a poem in Spenserian stanzas based on the story of Cupid and Psyche, had demonstrable influence on the Romantics. This edition contains the fine engraved frontis portrait by Caroline Watson (1761-1814) after the portrait by Romney. It was followed by third and fourth editions in the same format. Auchincruive bookplate on the front paste-down.
