An article by Arthur Machen (1863-1947) lamenting the poor quality of English food, particularly as found in pubs and coffee houses: "The average man who likes a decent meal has, through long years of bad practice, ceased to connect the notion of good eating with English cooking." The piece originally appeared in Wine and Food (Spring 1938) and is here first separately printed for Nathan Van Patten and The Arthur Machen Society by Jack Stauffacher of the Greenwood Press. The woodcut, lent from collector Vincent Porcaro, was by Thomas Bewick. Van Patten, head librarian at Stanford University, was a Machen collector and scholar.Price: $150.00
