Comments

Anthony Trollope's fine edition of the Commentaries of Caesar, and the fourth in Blackwood's series of Ancient Classics for English Readers, edited by W. Lucas Collins. Trollope's interesting 27-page introduction begins "It may perhaps be fairly said that the Commentaries of Caesar are the beginning of modern history. . . . The simplicity of the narrative which he has left us is their chief characteristic, if not their greatest charm." Following the Commentaries is Trollope's seven-page conclusion. Brocklebank bookplate on the front paste-down, with the signature of T. Brocklebank on the half-title.
