A clever collection of maxims, interwoven with short character sketches (Camilla, Melissa, Praxiteles, Flora, etc.) and reflections, written in collaboration by Fulke Greville and his wife, the poet Frances Macartney Greville. Fulke Greville (1717-1806) was handsome dandy, an "accomplished and tonish young man in society" (ODNB), and his wife Frances (1727-1806) was an accomplished poet. The Flora character in the sketches is thought to have been inspired by her. Their Maxims went through several editions. See the ODNB for both Grevilles, and for Frances also see Roger Lonsdale's Eighteenth-Century Women Poets, pages 190-194. Armorial bookplate of William Downes on the front paste-down.Price: $450.00
