Comments

The first substantial published work by Jonathan Swift, preceded only by an ode in fifth volume of John Dunton's Athenian Gazette (1692). Swift spent nearly ten years as secretary to the statesman and author William Temple, assisting him in preparing his letters and memoirs for the press. In addition to his editorial work, Swift wrote the dedication, the prefatory “Publisher’s Epistle to the Reader,” and a short editorial note. Temple’s will directed that any profits from his collected works be paid to Swift.
