Susie C. Clark was a prolific Boston author, who was published by Arena Press, among others. Her most widely read work was the travel narrative The Round Trip from the Hub to the Golden Gate (1890), but she also traveled, apparently on a separate journey, to Alaska, the Pacific Northwest and down through Yellowstone, which she writes about in this novel-travel narrative Lorita, An Alaskan Maiden. Of its 17 chapters, four are almost completely descriptions of travel in Alaska and Yellowstone, one of the earliest accounts of Alaska and Yellowstone by a woman. The descriptions of travel are interwoven with the story of Lorita Snowton, a young woman born out of wedlock in Alaska, who meets traveling Americans and joins them as they return to the lower 48. Lorita is tellingly dedicated to "The Alaskan Tourists of June 1891, Many Cordial Remembrances and Kindly Greeting."Sold
