An early work on Arizona by speculator, miner and promoter Sylvester Mowry (1830-71), which was first published in Washington in 1859 as an effort to persuade Congress into designating Arizona a separate territory from New Mexico. That initial effort failed, due in large part to complications caused by the Civil War. This second edition, with added material and a folding map, was published by Anton Roman of San Francisco. The "Appendix to the Second Edition" covered mining and mineral resources, with references to the Apaches, the role of the federal government in administering the Territory, and the benefits of the Overland Stage. It was largely intended to promote Mowry’s interests and investments in the region. Mowry was a controversial but interesting figure, who was undeniably instrumental in bringing national attention to the potential of the Arizona as an area for settlement. See Wikipedia. Ex-library copy from the City of Lowell Public Library, with their bookplate on the front paste-down, stamped "Discard," small ink number on the title-page and occasional round embossed stamp.Price: $450.00
