¶ In the late 1960s, the legendary critic and man of letters, Edmund Wilson (1895-1972), began work on his final book, Upstate, a history and memoir of the part of New York State where his mother’s family had lived and where Wilson spent the better part of his summers from 1950-1970, at the family home in Talcottville, which he had inherited. The first six chapters contain Wilson’s history of the region and his family’s role in it. The subsequent chapters contain his notebook diaries from the twenty years he lived at the home, usually during the summer months, beginning in 1950. ¶ In the early 1960s, Wilson arranged with Donald Gallup of the Bienecke Library to sell his manuscripts and papers to Yale once he was finished with them. Upstate was the last book he saw through the press, and when he died in 1972 this manuscript of the first part of Upstate was still in his possession. It was found later in the Talcottville home by his daughter Rosalind Baker Wilson, who, like her father, had inherited the house. This is the only recorded manuscript of a book or portion of a book of any length by Edmund Wilson not held at the Beinecke or any other library. Aside from holograph letters, Wilson manuscript material has not been available in the marketplace.Price: $7,500.00
