In 1716 the prominent London bookseller Jacob Tonson announced a forthcoming edition of Ovid's Metamorphoses, edited by Samuel Garth, with translations by distinguished writers, to be issued in folio format and "adorned with sculptures." A rival publication was quickly afoot, under the auspices of booksellers A. Bettesworth, W. Taylor and E. Curll, compiled by George Sewell, with several eminent translators and "adorned with sculptures." It was in a duodecimo format, in two volumes. In addition to the idea for the publication, Sewell borrowed a few of the translations, as well.Sold
