Comments¶ A collection of eight of Irving's earliest sketches, mainly theatre reviews, all written under the pseudonym Jonathan Oldstyle. They first appeared in 1802 in the Morning Chronicle, a newspaper edited and published by his brother Peter Irving, and are reprinted here in an unauthorized edition, which was an obvious attempt to capitalize on Irving's recent popularity with the Sketch Book and Bracebridge Hall. The letters are preceded by an unsigned eight-page biographical sketch of Irving, very likely one of the first of its kind.
