Comments

A collection of eight of Washington Irving's earliest sketches and theatre reviews, all originally written under the pseudonym Jonathan Oldstyle. They first appeared in 1802 in the Morning Chronicle, a newspaper edited and published by his brother Peter Irving, and are collected here in an obvious attempt to capitalize on the popularity of the Sketch Book (1819) and Bracebridge Hall (1822). The letters are preceded by an unsigned eight-page biographical sketch of Irving, very likely one of the first of its kind.
