Comments

A remarkable account of the life and career of architect Henry Hobson Richardson (1838-1886), one of the most famous architects of the American Gilded Age, handsomely illustrated with large (but unsigned) heliotype photographs and illustrations, accompanied by a memoir of his life and career (including a complete list of his works) by Mariana Griswold Van Rensselaer, more commonly known as Mrs. Schuyler Van Rensselaer (1851-1934). Ms. Van Rensselaer was very active in the New York art world and a prolific author and contributor to art periodicals. The list of her various works recorded in OCLC is long and impressive, several of which were in collaboration with illustrator Joseph Pennell. She was the first American woman to write extensively about architecture, and this is the first study of its kind about the life and career of an American Architect.
