Comments

The only surviving work of Colluthus, the epic poet from Lycopolis in Egypt who flourished in the 5th century AD. He retells in verse (392 hexameters) one of the most famous stories from ancient history: that of Paris and Helen, and her abduction which resulted in the Trojan War. The text of the poem is preceded by an interesting eight-page preface by the anonymous translator, who defends his work (particularly considering that it was "written and performed before the full age of seventeen"), and opines that "this poem might have received a great advantage from the masterly hand of Pope . . . [who] would doubtless (had he performed the translation) have given this verse a more gay turn of expression and delighted his readers with his usual briskness."
