Comments

A complete translation of the second edition of Les Vignes Americaines by French viticulturists Pierre Viala and Louis Ravaz, which appeared in 1896 in France and slightly later in an abridged English translation in Australia. This "California Edition," as it is called in the preface, was translated, with an new introduction by Edmund Twight of Berkeley, California, and Raymond Dubois of Cape Town, South Africa. The text deals mostly with the pest phylloxera, the destruction it was causing to wines in Napa, Sonoma, Sacramento and San Joaquin valleys - and a method of its extinction, which to the dismay of the European viticulturists was the reconstitution of their vineyards with American phylloxera-resistant vines. Stamp on the front paste-down of the County of Santa Cruz Department of Agriuculture. A scarce book in the trade. OCLC records numerous copies in institutions, particularly in California.
