Comments

The celebrated and often reprinted edition of Catullus and his two fellow Roman poets, Tibullus and Propertius, edited by French scholar Joseph Justus Scalinger (1549-1609), one of the most influential classical scholars of the Renaissance. Scalinger’s Catullus became the definitive text of the great lyrical poet, and like many of Scalinger’s works, a model for future textual scholarship. Scalinger "produced, in 1577, a new textus receptus of Catullus (if less so for Tibullus and Propertius), which endured, in common use with some modifications, for two hundred and fifty years" - Arthur Freeman, Fifty Rare and Interesting Continental Books, Summer 2020.
