Comments

The adventures of three siblings who journey to Portugal with their parents to escape the harsh winter of England. Descriptions of the cities, towns, monuments, their histories and people are interwoven with the story of their extended trip, and are based on the actual travels of Georgianna Mitford Ancram, who was in Portugal several times between 1814 and 1821. In the preface she acknowledges the difficult political environment in Portugal and adds that she was “among the last of the English, whom the grateful feelings of the Portuguese permitted to remain in their country.” This is the first of several similar works by Ancram, all anonymously published by Harvey & Darton.
