Comments

The handsomely produced first collected poems of John Greenleaf Whittier (1807-1892), one of the great American poets of the 19th century. This edition includes all of his poetical work to date, organized by narrative poems based on American legends, his famous anti-slavery poems, memorials and miscellaneous poems. The frontis portrait and other engravings after Hammatt Billings are finely executed and this copy includes an eighth plate that is not in the list of illustrations, but is noted in BAL as inserted in some copies. A few years later Billings illustrated the first edition of Uncle Tom's Cabin.
