Comments

The gossipy and scandalous memoirs of the eccentric and learned Abbe de François Timoleon Choisy (1644-1724), who, at his mother's encouragement, dressed as a female as a young boy, a habit which he continued into adulthood. Extravagance led to poverty and Choisy took refuge in the church. He became an ordained priest, and in 1685 accompanied Chevalier de Chaumont on a mission to Siam, which he wrote about in Journal ou Suite du Voyage de Siam (1688). He was a member the Académie Française and wrote several historical and theological works, but these posthumous memoirs, with their account of his cross-dressing and risqué tales of his contemporaries, will be the work for which he is remembered. It has gone through numerous editions. This first edition is rare.
