¶ A fine watercolor by artist Paul Alexander, who grew up in the East and migrated to Northern California in 1956 at the encouragement of fellow classmates at Black Mountain College who were involved in the emerging San Francisco Renaissance. Alexander's early years in California were peripatetic and classic starving artist. In a response to an inquiry about the painting, Alexander recently wrote: "At the time I was a guest of Joanne & was in the habit of drawing and painting, watercolors: all the time. This watercolor is not a portrait. Joanne sits at a desk/dining table writing - the view out the window is the Bolinas Mesa. It was the early 70's. We were happy to be alive & in good health. This painting is not my actual type. I guess I was drifting from abstraction into observed painting, which is where I am now." Joanne Kyger later wrote about Alexander as an artist: He was "one of the finest artistic energies comprising the culturally engaged painting and literary scene of the San Francisco Renaissance. Familiar to many are the skill of his watercolors - luminous, grounded, grand, classic . . ." From the library of Glenn Todd, who was acquainted with both artist and poet.
