Comments¶ The Yemassee, first published in 1835, was the most popular of William Gilmore Simms’s border romances, an elaborate series of stories, in the manner of Cooper's Leatherstocking Tales, about warfare and revenge between the Yemassee Indians and the English settlers of colonial South Carolina. This edition, with a new preface by Simms, was published by Redfield in its Romances of the Revolution series. Contemporary bookplate on the front paste-down, above which is the modern bookplate of Christopher Clark Geest.
