CommentsThe famous biography of William Cavendish (1616-1684), the Earl of Newcastle, by his famous literary wife, Margaret Lucas Cavendish (1623-1673), the first English woman to publish extensively. Cavendish’s biography was widely read and admired when first issued, and in the ensuing ages literary opinions have remained high, with praise coming from Charles Lamb, S. T. Coleridge, and Virginia Woolf, among others. Ink deletions on pages 9 and 26, as usual, and corrections in manuscript on the following pages: to the name "Banaum" on page 60; the word "now" is added on page 84; and on page 156 there are four corrections beginning on line 18 in the lists of numbers of children. Several of these corrections are present in other copies and have been attributed to the author herself or a secretary on her behalf. Cavendish’s biography is occasionally accompanied by a portrait, but the portrait was engraved after this book was published and is not called for. Bookplate of Robert Crewe-Milnes on the front paste-down and gilt ornament on the upper board.
