¶ A substantial and accomplished collection of poems by a young lady from Fair Park, Maryland, on numerous themes: elegies to lost loved ones and friends, epistles to the poet William Hayley, to the character Clarissa, to a Miss Chamney “on her lap-dog,” an ode on “General Washington’s Accepting the Command of the Army in 1798,” and a tantalizing poem to "Miss Jane Austen," but too early for The Jane Austen. This is Mrs. Allen’s only book, which she dedicates to President Thomas Jefferson, and it has been claimed to be the earliest published book of poetry by a Maryland woman, a claim I do not doubt, but cannot substantiate.
