Description8vo, quarter white parchment, gray paper boards, printed paper label. Frontis portrait of a mounted albumen print (10.5 x 7.25 cm) of a daguerreotype portrait of Thoreau by B.W. Maxham of Worcester, Mass, first taken in 1856.
CommentsThe first bibliography of Thoreau, compiled by Thoreau enthusiast Samuel Arthur Jones, a resident of Detroit and author of two other works - both scarce - on Thoreau. The frontis portrait is a print of the famous daguerreotype by B.W. Maxham, probably reproduced with the assistance of Alfred W. Hosmer of Concord, Mass., another Thoreau enthusiast and photographer who owned one of the rare originals. Hosmer also reproduced this portrait for use in his pamphlet Chronology of the Life of Henry D. Thoreau, 1817-1862, privately published in 1895. Older unidentified bookseller's description pasted to the front paste-down.
