Description

12mo, early 20th-century brown morocco bound for Brentano's, gilt rules, decorations and lettering, a.e.g. 13 pages of explanatory text followed by 75 etched plates, the majority of which are by Darly & Edwards, dated variously Sept. 16, 1756 to late 1757.

Comments

An engaging series of caricatures of English society, fashion, culture, religion and politics. A few are entitled “Hieroglyphics,” and are decrypted in the explanatory text. There were four subsequent editions that covered years 1758-60, with additional plates. All the editions are scarce, in institutions and the trade. ESTC states "contains reduced copies of large plates, as well as original designs," and attributes the publication in part to the printmakers Edwards and Darly.
