CommentsAn Irish aquatint after the caricature by Thomas Rowlandson, first published in London Sept. 25, 1784, with the famous scene depicting the bookseller looking unsympathetically at the struggling author who is pleading his case, manuscript in hand. Brocas was a well-known Irish watercolorist, illustrator and engraver, and 88 Dame Street was an active location in Dublin for engravers and print makers of the time, including those who produced pirated editions of English originals, of which this is most likely an example. For many years this copy was the property of San Francisco bookseller Warren R. Howell, who was also known for sometimes looking unsympathetically on visiting booksellers and impecunious collectors.
