CommentsA poem on country life as the ideal environment for poets and statesmen. John William Grayson (1788-1863) was a native of South Carolina and both poet and statesman. He pursued classical studies, practiced law, served in the South Carolina and U.S. House of Representatives, and he opposed the South's secession. He was also a contributor to the Southern Review. This was his only published book of poetry.
