Description

8vo, the complete novel as it appeared in Cornhill Magazine, extracted from the original 12 monthly serials and bound together in one volume, contemporary dark blue half calf, marbled paper boards, red leather label, gilt decorations and lettering. 12 plates and 12 vignettes after drawings by Helen Paterson Allingham.

Comments

¶ A landmark Victorian novel, here in its first appearance in print, published anonymously. Only the plates were used in subsequent book editions; the vignettes were never reproduced, even though Hardy was very fond of the illustrations. He later told Edmund Gosse that Helen Paterson Allingham "was the best illustrator I ever had" (Purdy).
