Comments

¶ An early work by Thomas Percy (1729-1811), and an interesting work of English Sinology. Within a few years Percy would gain literary fame for his Relics of Ancient English Poetry (1765). The eight pieces collected here are "A Dissertation on the Language and Characters of Chinese" by Percy; "Rules of Conduct" by a Chinese; A translation of the tragedy "Zhao shi gu er" (The Little Orphan of the House of Chao), the first Chinese drama to appear in Europe; Richard Hurd's essay about Chinese drama; "Authentic Memoirs of the Christian Church in China;" two pieces on Chinese landscape gardening; and "A Description of the Solemnities Observed at Peking on the Emperor's Mother Entering on the Sixtieth Year of her Age." ¶ Contemporary bookplate on the front paste-down of Lord John Somers.
