Comments¶ An interesting and important work on economic, political and cultural life in America during the Revolution by Italian Filippo Mazzei (1739-1816), physician, wine merchant and horticulturist who moved to Virginia in 1773 to promote the cultivation of grapes and other fruits. He lived close to Charlottesville, where he and his next-door neighbor, Thomas Jefferson, became kindred spirits and lasting friends. His Recherches constitute his memoirs and observations of his tenure in America. See the DAB for an account of this "extraordinarily versatile" man.
