Comments23 titles by Cooper, translated into French by Emile de la Bedolliere and nicely illustrated by Charles Albert d'Arnoux, aka Bertall (1820-1882), the prolific French illustrator. These titles, and several others by Cooper, were originally issued in parts in Barba's series of Romans Populaires Illuistrés and were apparently later issued bound together. Spiller and Blackburn state that the series or individual titles were reprinted five times between 1849 and 1875. The 23 titles here were bound randomly, each with separate paginations and it is likely they were bound from the parts. The text of each of the two volumes is preceded by a title-page or cover apparently from the original parts issue. Round stamp of the Bibliotheque Paroissiale on the title-pages and on a few pages of text. The binding title reads "F. Cooper / Oeuvres / Illustrees." At the foot of each spine is the ownership name of "G. Hantraye."
