The marine biological trade catalogue of the Pacific Biological Laboratories, operated by Ed Ricketts and immortalized by John Steinbeck. Ricketts first appeared as the model for the character “Doc” in Steinbeck's Cannery Row and later in Sweet Thursday, and he was the co-author of The Sea of Cortez with Steinbeck. The first catalogue of the Pacific Biological Laboratories was issued in 1925; this second one in 1929 (dated 1929-1930), and there was a second printing of this second catalogue, with a variant imprint. The Pacific Biological Laboratories’ catalogues are some of the earliest examples of the effort to define the ecology of the seashore, a movement in which Ricketts was a recognized pioneer.Sold
