During the 13 years covered by these invoices, John A. Burnham of Boston - apparently an attorney who worked in downtown Boston and traveled to New York and Philadelphia - was slowly acquiring the classic gentleman's library, with the standard English and American authors in sets and bindings. His favorite book shop by far was Little, Brown, which was located not far from Burnham's office in Pemberton Square, but he obviously patronized other establishments when he traveled. The invoices vary in amount, but on occasion Burnham spent well over $100.00.
