Condition: Scott manuscript material with interesting Scottish content is uncommon in the trade. Some minor tears and stains; in fine condition.

Physical Description

Single sheet, 20 x 33 cm, folded to make four pages, three stanzas of four lines each, approximately 120 words. Text of the song on page one. Later note in another hand on page four.

Comments

¶ A traditional Scottish song, a shorter version of which Scott included in The Fortunes of Nigel (1822), page 476. James Hogg also had a version of this song in his The Jacobite Relics of Scotland (1819-1821). Scott collected his own renderings of these songs to use in his novels and for eventual publication in his complications of Scottish melodies and aires, but this one did not appear in the latter collections. ¶ On page four is a note in pencil in a near contemporary hand: "Given by Miss Clephane for whom it was written to G. S. Cantley [?]. The three Miss MacLean Clephanes of Torloisk, Isle of Man, were wards of Sir. W. Scott . . ."
