CommentsCampbell briefly writes: "Dear Robin, Excuse haste. Was away in Spain when your letter came. How about this satirical fragment on T. E. Lawrence? Best wishes, Roy Campbell." On the verso is an 18-line savagely mocking poem, in Campbell's holograph, entitled "A British N.C.O to T. E. Lawrence, on The Mint. (For Richard Aldington)." with footnotes. Apparently not published. ¶ Campbell is responding to the first English edition of The Mint, which was not published until 1955 (there had been a highly limited edition in 1936), in which Lawrence recounts his unfortunate experiences in the R.A.F which followed his well known and publicized triumphs. Provenance: From Bertram Rota Ltd. Catalogue 150 (Spring 1967), item 17, and later from the collection of a San Francisco collector of Roy Campbell. From the inventory of Burton Weiss, Bookseller.
