CommentsA poem by Hardy written at the request of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. The Society first published it in a celebratory volume, followed June 16 by publication in the London Times. The Hardys rushed to get "Compassion" privately published in this edition to prevent it being usurped by others, but it was nonetheless widely reprinted, including an edition by the First Edition Club. Mrs. Hardy contracted the Chiswick Press and Henry Ling to privately print over 15 similar volumes, beginning in 1916, all of which are rare. See Purdy page 349 for a short history of these titles.
