Comments

¶ A fine presentation copy, Inscribed on the half-title "To / Miss Balfour, / These pages, crossed by the shadows of some / of her ancestors, are sent by / Thomas Hardy." On the front paste-down is the signature of Alice Balfour, 1912, and on the upper board are her stylized initials. ¶ Alice Balfour was well acquainted with Hardy through her brother, Lord Arthur James Balfour, prominent politician, Prime Minister and author of the famous Balfour Declaration (1917), and she spent numerous occasions with him, including one which Hardy later recorded: "Took Arthur Balfour's sister in to dinner at the Jeaunes. Liked her frank, sensible, womanly way of talking. The review have made me shy of presenting copes of Tess, and I told her plainly that if I gave her one it might be the means of getting me into hot water. She said 'Now don't I look old enough to read any novel with safety by this time . . .'" (Thomas Hardy, The Later Years, page 6).
