Comments¶ Holmes' first novel, an interesting story and study of heredity as told by a professor of medicine. The mother of the novel’s central figure, Elsie Venner, is bitten by a snake before Elsie is born, and the child developes a snake-like character as she grows up which is traced to her mother's prenatal wound. Later in life Elsie saves a lover from a rattlesnake. Margaret Fuller is believed to be the prototype of Elsie.
