Comments

¶ Israel Potter's story ("purported autobiography, of dubious authenticity" - Howes) recounts his experiences as a foot soldier in the American Revolution and his subsequent exile in England. Herman Melville read one of these first two editions and used the story as the basis of his novel Israel Potter: His Fifty Years of Exile (1855).
