DescriptionSingle sheet of 11 x 8.5 inch onion-skin stationery with the printed letterhead of the New American Library of World Literature, publishers of Signet and Mentor Books. The letter is addressed to Jeffers at his Carmel, California address and constitutes an agreement for The New American Library to publish two of his poems, "The Shears" and "Animula" in their periodical anthology New American Writing. The payment terms are detailed (Jeffers initially received $20.00 for the two poems), and Jeffers signed his name in full as "Accepted and Agreed" and filled in the date of November 30, 1953. This is the publisher's copy, and there are five later annotations in the margins about subsequent checks that were sent after more than 100,000 copies were sold.
