Comments

¶ Howe's first book and a landmark in the development of American realistic fiction. Initially Howe couldn't find a publisher and resorted to printing it at his newspaper office. It rapidly gained national attention, and within a year James R. Osgood brought out an edition published in Boston. The Story of a Country Town is “one of the most genuinely American stories ever published . . . [and] it is the first American novel fully to measure up to the ideal expressed in Garland's great plea for a national literature” - Fullerton, Selective Bibliography of American Literature, page 149.
