Comments¶ An epistle dedicated to Sir Richard Temple, Lord Cobham (1675-1749), a friend of Pope who had been disgraced by Walpole. Pope comes to Cobham's defense obliquely, writing about the difficulty of reading human character correctly, but the half-title is direct: "On the Knowledge and Characters of Men: To Richard Lord Cobham." See Mack, Alexander Pope, A Life, pages 596-600.
