¶ An act passed by parliament under the reign of George II that attempts to discourage swearing by establisting a set of fines for the offenders: first time offenders could be fined from one to five shillings; seamen, soldiers and government employees were fined at rates lower than gentlemen; and swearing within earshot of a constable could land one in a house of corrections or the stocks. Swear not!
