The first play by Dickens to be performed or published, a farce based on the chapter “The Great Winglebury Duel” in Sketches by Boz. John Pitt Harley, the stage manager of St. James’s, played the title role and was accompanied by Madame Sala, the mother of George Augustus Sala. Its initial run was for sixty nights.
