¶ Morris' first book, which includes his famous poem “The Oak,” the first line of which is “Woodman, spare that tree!” See Merle Johnson, You Know These Lines, pages 120-121. Morris, an influential Knickerbocker literary figure, was the founder and editor of the New York Mirror, a literary magazine that published the works of Bryant, Willis, Paulding, Fay (to whom this book is dedicated) and Halleck. Inscribed on the front free endpaper to another distinguished Knickerbocker author “Grenville Mellen, Esq. / with the kindest regards of / the Author.” On the front blank is the signature of Caroline M. Mellen.
