CommentsThe first book by the future historian and philosopher, John Fiske (1842-1901), an essay written in response to the historian James Parton's Smoking and Drinking (Ticknor & Fields, 1868), in which Parton denounces the use of tobacco and alcohol. Fiske writes his essay much like a book review, taking point-by-point issue with Parton. In later years after he had become a distinguished historian like Parton, Fiske preferred to disown this publication and wouldn’t allow it be included with his collected works.
