Comments¶ Six of Matastasio's famous operas, newly translated by John Hoole (1727-1803), the playwright and friend of Samuel Johnson, who wrote the dedication to the Duke of Northumberland. Hoole also wrote a play, Timanthes, based on Metastasio's Demofonte, and he is remembered for his translation of Tasso, which earned him the nickname of Tasso Hoole.
