Comments

¶ The important essays by Jonathan Richardson, the elder (1665-1745), published together for the first time, as a supplement and complement to Walpole's Anecdotes of Painters and Engravers (Strawberry Hill, 1762-1771). Richardson's work is regarded as one of the first books in English on collecting and connoisseurship. ¶ The first state of the title-page has "Printed at Strawberry Hill" above a vignette that is in imitation of the one used at Strawberry Hill. This work is sometimes described as being a publication of Strawberry Hill, which it is not.
