CommentsThe first book by poet and writer John Duncombe (1729-86), a popular and well-received imitation of Gray's Elegy, which was sufficiently appreciated that it was on several occasions reprinted with editions of Gray. See Northup 54, 55, 62, 525 and 566. In 1778 Duncombe attempted another parody on Gray, An Elegy Written in Canterbury Cathedral, which was not so favorably received.
