CommentsA fair copy manuscript of a Spanish translation of the famous French novel by César Vichard de Saint-Réal (1639-1692). First published in French in 1672, Don Carlos – a novella about the forbidden passion between Don Carlos, the son of Philip II of Spain, and his father's wife Elisabeth of Valois – was a mixture of romance, politics and history. It was later the basis for Friedrich Schiller’s play Don Carlos, Verdi’s opera Don Carlos, and Thomas Otway’s play Don Carlos, Prince of Spain. The first Spanish edition that could be located in OCLC is dated 1796. OCLC also describes a similar manuscript, dated 1701.
