A response to John William Cunningham's The Velvet Cushion (1814), a fictional narrative about the Church of England in the form of the memoir of a vicarage cushion, whose first recollections are “of an upholsterer in Fleet-street, in the days of bloody Queen Mary.” The Velvet Cushion - an entry into the field of inanimate fiction - was very popular, going through ten editions by 1816, but apparently not popular with the Rev. John Styles, who here attempts to give his spin on the Church, from the same cushion with a new covering.
