¶ Inscribed on the front flyleaf to "Rev. Dr. Breck / at Aspinwall / U.S.C. / I. S. (?) DeGraw." James Lloyd Breck (1818-1876) was celebrated Episcopal missionary who was known for his zealous efforts to convert Native Americans. He founded schools and congregations throughout Minnesota, before coming to California and establishing the Pacific Coast Mission (for Breck, see DAB and American National Biography). The residue of a sticker or label is in evidence on the front pastedown.
